Dak Prescott interception turns into valuable…

2 min read

The Dallas Cowboys are at training camp for a reason as an interception of Dak Prescott turns into a teachable moment for himself and his newest receiver.

The Dallas Cowboys are less than a week into training camp and they are already learning lessons that should impact their upcoming season in a positive way. And there are certainly plenty of things to learn.

The Cowboys promoted former quarterbacks coach, Kellen Moore, to offensive coordinator (OC) this offseason. Moore spent six years under former Cowboys OC Scott Linehan, both as a member of the Cowboys and the Detroit Lions. And it’s clear he’s not looking to change much of the playbook that was installed by his predecessor which lead the Cowboys to becoming divisional champions twice in the past three years.

But Moore does have his own ideas, disguises, and wrinkles that he’s attempting to implement within the Cowboys offense this summer. Combine that learning curve with the presence of some new faces on that side of the roster, and mistakes are bound to happen.

But that’s what training camp is for. And there is no better example than what happened during the second day of padded practice on Tuesday. And luckily for fans, the teaching moment was captured on video.

During a live-compete section of practice, quarterback Dak Prescott was standing in the shotgun position away from center. After the ball was snapped, Prescott faked a hand-off to the cutting running back on a play-action pass and quickly threw the ball to Randall Cobb. The team’s newest receiver, who was signed this offseason after spending his entire eight-year pro career with the Green Bay Packers, appeared to be running a curl route back towards the quarterback.

But before the veteran wideout was able to turn to make the reception, fourth-year safety Xavier Woods jumped the route in front of Cobb, easily snatching the ball out of the air and running it back for a pick-six. The play was captured on video as part of Training Camp Live, which the Cowboys’ published on their official YouTube page.

According to longtime columnist for DallasCowboys.com, Mickey Spagnola, both Dak Prescott and Randall Cobb blamed themselves for the miscommunication. They also realized what each did wrong and vowed to correct it moving forward. During an interview on 105.3 The Fan, Kellen Moore said it was actually good that the interception happened as it became a teachable moment for both players. But hey, that’s what training camp is for, learning lessons that should have a positive impact on the upcoming season.
